Fresh Milled Hawaiian Rolls

There’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked bread wafting through your home. The warmth of the oven and the aroma of rising dough create a comforting and inviting atmosphere. But have you ever tried making your own rolls from scratch? If not, it’s time to give it a try – and what better recipe to start with than fresh milled Hawaiian rolls?

Hawaiian rolls are a type of sweet bread that originated in Hawaii in the 1950s. They are typically made with a combination of flour, sugar, eggs, milk, and butter, and are known for their soft and fluffy texture. While you can certainly buy pre-made Hawaiian rolls at the store, there’s something special about making them from scratch. During my recipe testing I tasted the store bought & frankly, they taste like sugar & cardboard!

One way to take your homemade Hawaiian rolls to the next level is by using freshly milled flour. Freshly milled flour is made by grinding whole grains into flour just before using it. This process not only results in a fresher, more flavorful flour, but it also helps to preserve the nutrients and enzymes found in the grain. To make fresh milled Hawaiian rolls, you’ll need a few key ingredients, including whole wheat flour, sugar (or sweetener of choice), butter, milk, and yeast. You’ll also need a grain mill to grind your whole wheat flour, but don’t worry – many modern grain mills are easy to use and can be purchased online or at your local kitchen supply store.

Once you’ve milled your flour, the rest of the process is fairly straightforward. You’ll mix the ingredients together, let the dough rise, shape it into rolls, and bake them in the oven until they’re golden brown. The result? Soft, fluffy rolls that are perfect for any occasion.

Not only are fresh milled Hawaiian rolls delicious, but they’re also healthier than their store-bought counterparts. By using whole grains, you’ll be getting more fiber, protein, and nutrients than you would from refined flour. And because you’re making the rolls from scratch, you can control the amount of sugar and fat that goes into them.

So why not give fresh milled Hawaiian rolls a try? With their sweet, buttery flavor and soft, fluffy texture, they’re sure to become a new favorite in your household. Plus, the satisfaction of making your own bread from scratch is a feeling like no other. Happy baking!

Ingredients

  • 6 cups fresh milled hard white wheat flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup salted butter, melted
  • ½ cup warm milk can sub with unsweetened DF milk
  • ½ cup warm water
  • ¼ cup sugar can sub with sweetener of choice
  • ½ cup crushed pineapple, drained must be crushed or you will have chunks of pineapple in your rolls
  • ¼ cup pineapple juice

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, warm milk, warm water, egg, crushed pineapple, and pineapple juice. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a sticky dough forms. Knead 10 minutes or until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

    Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 16 equal pieces.

Roll each piece of dough into a ball and place it in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover the dish with a clean towel and let the dough rise for an additional 20-30 minutes. Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped. Brush the tops of the rolls with a little bit of melted butter. Let the rolls cool for a few minutes before serving.
